New DMR Repeater for Washington County

On August 5, 2022, members of the Washington County Amateur Radio Club deployed a new DMR repeater in Brenham, Texas, expanding the club’s digital communications capabilities. The system includes a Motorola SLR5700 repeater paired with Cellwave UHF duplexers, providing reliable digital voice communications for operators in the area.

Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) is an open digital radio standard developed by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) and is widely used in commercial and public safety radio systems around the world. The technology allows multiple users to share a single radio frequency more efficiently than traditional analog systems.

DMR uses a technology known as TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access), which divides a radio signal into separate time slots. Each frequency can support two time slots (Slot 1 and Slot 2), allowing two different conversations to occur simultaneously on the same frequency. This design improves spectrum efficiency while providing additional operating capacity for users.

In addition to local communications, DMR technology allows repeaters to be connected to regional, national, and worldwide digital radio networks, enabling operators in Washington County to communicate with Amateur Radio operators across the state, across the country, and around the world.

Additional technical details and operating information for this system can be found on the club’s Repeater page.
